When Life is Spinning Out of Control

Feel like you just can’t get life under control? It takes everything in you to keep your head above water in life. The harder you try the farther behind you fall. Kids are destroying the house faster than you can pick up after them. Too many phone calls that need made and not a spare quiet minute to make them in. Let alone knowing what you are going to make for dinner or do for that school thing.

Take a Breath

When you find yourself in this overwhelm and fatigue start of by taking a deep breath and telling yourself nothing has gone wrong. Your brain is doing exactly what it is designed to do. It is designed to seek pleasure, avoid pain, and keep you safe. Overwhelm from the out of control is keeping you safe by avoiding the hard stuff or the unknown.

You are normal and nothing has gone wrong! You have got this mama!

Recognize the Emotions

With all the chaos going on you are bound to have a lot of emotions. Emotions are part of our everyday lives. Emotions are caused by our thoughts about what is going on. They are neither bad nor good. They just are.

Can you stop and name what you are feeling? Maybe you are feeling overwhelm, sad, tired, angry, frustrated, or even excitement. But take the time to name what you are feeling. Acknowledging our feelings allows our bodies to process them properly rather than bottle them up to build pressure. You will be amazed at the relief that can come just from acknowledging your emotions.

Journal

Take 10 minutes to write down everything in your brain. It doesn’t matter how pretty it is or what you have to say. Just write down everything you are thinking for the next 10 minutes. How are you feeling about everything? What is on your to do list? What is the current situation? Do you like that situation or not? Just write! Writing helps your brain process as well. Write without judgement of yourself. Don’t write what you think you should think and feel, but how you really feel instead.

Plan

Now that you have taken a breath, named your emotions, and got everything out on paper, it is time to plan. If you didn’t make a to do list in the last step, do so now. What things on your list can be crossed off? Find the urgent ones and the ones that can wait.

Make a plan on how you are going to handle the chaos. Taking time to plan it out will bring clarity. It is amazing the energy the brain will waste wondering what to do next. It is trying to save us from doing the hard thing, so it spins in confusion. If the decision is already made then it’s easier to solve for that problem.

Have Grace

Grace is being caring and comforting of oneself. When your life feels out of control, its normal to be more up tight and emotional. That’s okay. What do you need in the moment? You are not less of a person for having a hard time or a better person for keeping it all together.

Love yourself through the process. The answer is always love.  Love isn’t being indulgent and running away. It’s also not beating yourself up for not doing something. Love looks different in each scenario. But you will know you found it by the way you feel about yourself. Be gentle and understanding of the person you are.
