How to Actually Get Rid of the Extra Stuff in Your Home

Are you over all the extra stuff at your house, but don’t know where to start. What if I told you it wasn’t with your stuff at all, but how you are thinking about your stuff. Let’s explore abundance and scarcity. My guess is you have a scarcity mindset if you feel like you have too much stuff in your home.

Scarcity vs. Abundance

A scarcity mindset tells us that we might need this one day, we can’t live without it, etc. While an abundance mindset sounds something like I can figure it out if I don’t have the exact tool. For example, when I decluttered my kitchen I got rid of my apple peeler corer. Later I went looking for it and couldn’t find it. Instead of running to the store to buy another one when I made apple crisp, I just looked around for what I had. I cut up my apples with a knife. I was still able to get the job done.

I was able to get rid of the extra gadget because I believed that I could find a way to peel apples if I needed to. I believed that I could figure out how to get the job done instead of focusing on what if I want to use this one day.

You may be thinking, but Keira that was one pan of apple crisp. Not a big deal, but what if I want to do a whole bunch of apples one day. Let’s think this thru. How often do you really do this? If it’s often then keep the kitchen gadget. If not then get rid of it. Free up some space for stuff you use regularly.

And if you really do end up doing a bunch of apples after you get rid of it, what can you do? Use a knife, borrow one from a friend, or find one used to buy.

Free Space

But by getting rid of stuff in your home, you free up space in the rest of your life. If you have less stuff it’s easier to use and put away the stuff you do use. It’s easier to find the things you already have, so you don’t rebuy anyways. And it quiets that silent to do list we talked about last week. (Go back to this blog post to learn more.)

With fewer things in your home, you free up mental space along with physical space. By letting go of the I might need this one day, you gain freedom to enjoy your home and life today. Do you really want to live your life in fear of what you might need one day?

I know for me letting go of stuff that I might need one day or use only once every couple of years has freed up my life. There is more peace in my home and life. I can better enjoy having people in my home.
